Do Mosquito-Repellent Plants Actually Work? An Annapolis Landscaper’s Honest Answer
Every summer in Anne Arundel County, someone asks us to plant citronella, lavender, or “mosquito plants” to keep the bugs away. We get it: nobody wants to lose their backyard to mosquitoes in July. But here’s the honest answer most landscapers won’t give you: simply planting them does almost nothing.
The hard truth about “mosquito plants”
Plants like citronella geranium release their aromatic oils mainly when the leaves are crushed, not while they’re sitting peacefully in a pot. Research has found that growing the plants has almost no measurable effect on mosquitoes; in tests, mosquitoes will happily land on the plant itself. It’s the extracted oil that has any repellent power, and even then it’s modest. Studies show citronella-based repellents protect for under about 20 minutes on average, far less than DEET. Citronella candles help a little (one study cut bites roughly in half versus no candle), but a planter of citronella by your patio won’t. So no, landscaping alone won’t repel mosquitoes. But the right landscaping absolutely can make your yard far less hospitable to them, and that part is real.
What actually reduces backyard mosquitoes
Mosquitoes don’t travel far, and they breed in standing water, sometimes in as little as a bottle cap’s worth. The single most effective thing you can do is eliminate the water they breed in. Fix drainage and the low spots where water pools after rain (a common Maryland clay-soil problem), keep gutters clear and draining away from the house, and empty or refresh birdbaths, saucers, buckets, and tarps every week. Re-grade and re-route runoff so your yard dries out instead of holding puddles. And on the patio, a simple fan makes it hard for weak-flying mosquitoes to reach you.
Where landscaping really helps
This is exactly where good design earns its keep. Proper grading, drainage solutions, and dry creek beds keep water moving instead of sitting, removing breeding grounds at the source. Thoughtful plant spacing and airflow keep beds from staying damp and shady. It’s not about a magic plant; it’s about a yard that drains.
